The opportunities for getting out to do plein aire painting here are extremely slim. So I tried to make the best of the situation and decided that I can at least draw from my front door looking out to the street beyond our compound.

One of my favourite artists is Diebenkorn, whose work, both realistic abstract ,resonate with an interplay of form and colour.

I feel his influence in this piece, particularly in how the vertical lines create a rhythm, which emphasise the idea of a limited view through the doorway and out of the courtyard. Working with pastels is wonderful, and I enjoy the ability to use them to give subtle nuance through the shimmering colours.
